Over Dimensional Vehicle (ODV): All non-reducible (non-divisible) vehicle combinations or loads that:

  • Exceed 80,000 pounds gross weight; or
  • Exceed 8 feet, 6 inches in width; or
  • Exceed 14 feet in height; or
  • Exceed 10 feet of front or rear overhang; or
  • Exceed 70 feet in length.

Shorter Overweight Vehicle (SOV): All reducible (divisible) vehicle combinations or loads that:

  • Qualify as a "commodity" (see NAC 484D.510);and
  • Exceed 80,000 pounds gross weight and do not exceed 70 feet in length; or
  • Do not qualify for Longer Combination Vehicle (LCV) permits (see NRS 484D.615).

Longer Combination Vehicle (LCV): All reducible (divisible) vehicle combinations or loads that:

  • Exceed 70 feet in length.

Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles (Motor Carrier Division) for LCV permitting, as well as for truck registration and special fuel tax requirements.

General Permit Information

  • ODV Permits are issued only from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) Carson City Office.
  • Nevada has on-line or live operator permitting functions. There are no Ports of Entry or other locations issuing permits.
  • Permits when signed by the permittee become the original and must be carried at all times. No further copies are allowed.
  • Deadlines and processing times are described below for each permit category.
  • More stringent route restrictions than described below may be placed on permits.
  • Permittees are responsible for complying with any applicable instructions and route restrictions for Weight, Wide Loads, Long Loads, and Spring Thaw, as listed in NDOT letters of instruction at Permit Conditions and Restrictions .

  • Valid for one year from date of issue.
  • NDOT’s goal is to provide 30-day service on annual permit requests whether first-time or renewal. Permittee may apply via fax or at the office.
  • NDOT highly recommends that permittees plan at least 30 days in advance of any desired movement or lapse of any existing annual permit.
  • Manufactured and Mobile Homes are permitted in accordance with NAC 484D.625 (2b), NAC 484D.620 and NAC 484D.690.
 
  • Note #1: Hours of Daylight are one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset.
  • Note #2: Weekend Hours are from one-half hour after sunset on a Friday until one-half hour before sunrise on the immediately following Monday.

  • NDOT’s goal is to provide same day service on Five-Day permit requests.  The permittee is encouraged to apply one business day prior to any desired movement, either by telephone before 4:45 PM or at the office before 4:30 PM.
  • Manufactured and Mobile Homes are permitted in accordance with NAC 484D.625 (2b), NAC 484D.620 and NAC 484D.690.
  • Valid for five consecutive calendar days.
  • During the permitted timeframe, repeated movement is authorized in either direction on the permitted routes unless specifically restricted by the permit, by regulation, or by other rule.
  • Only one load authorized per permit.
 
  • Note #1: Hours of Daylight are one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset.
  • Note #2: Weekend Hours are from one-half hour after sunset on a Friday until one-half hour before sunrise on the immediately following Monday.
  • Note #3: See Holiday Restrictions for ODVs.
  • Note #4: Hours of Darkness are one-half hour after sunset until one-half hour before sunrise.
  • Note #5: Up to 120’ with some steerable trailers.
  • Note #6: Overhang is any portion of the load that extends beyond the front edge of the truck or truck-tractor or beyond the rear edge of the truck or trailer. Unless otherwise specified, overhang is the sum of both the front and rear overhang.
  • Note #8: These restrictions apply during all weekend hours on I80 between Sparks (Exit 21) and the CA/NV state line, and on I15 between Las Vegas (Exit 33) and the CA/NV state line. 110’ maximum length regardless of steerable trailer.
  • Note #9: If exceeding these dimensions, call for special instructions. A Five-Day Permit may be authorized in some situations, however processing may require additional business days.

Special Purpose ODV or Super Load ODV Permits

(Dimensions Exceeding those permissible with an Annual or Five-Day Permit)

  • Permits are considered on a case-by-case basis for exceptionally large or heavy vehicle combinations or loads.
  • See NDOT Instruction 14-1 for details and exceptions.
  • Must apply at least 5 days in advance by telephone or in person at 1263 South Stewart Street, Carson City, NV.
  • Typically valid for five days – one trip only.
  • Fees start at $25. Additional coordination within NDOT and with other agencies is normally required in these cases, and additional costs may be incurred and billed to the permittee.

Note: The holiday hour restrictions as described in the above charts are in effect only during hours of high traffic volume associated with these specific holidays. The actual restricted timeframes may or may not be on the observed holiday. The chart below describes when the holiday hours, weekend hours, and hours of darkness restrictions are in effect when the observed holiday falls on different days of the week. Other common state and federal holidays are intentionally not included in this list and therefore holiday hour restrictions do not apply to them, though the normal restrictions for weekend hours and hours of darkness do apply. These restrictions correspond to WASHTO guidelines.

  • Nevada does not issue Western Regional Permits but does honor them.
  • Movement must begin, end or pass through the issuing state.

    • Weight: 160,000 pounds gross; 600 pounds per inch of tire width; 21,500 pounds per axle; 43,000 pounds per tandem axle; 53,000 pounds per tridem (wheelbase more than 8 feet and less than 13 feet); all axle weights as prescribed in Appendix A of Western Regional Permit Desk Guide.
    • Width: 14 feet maximum.
    • Height: 14 feet maximum.
    • Length: 110 feet maximum.
    • No mobile homes.
