Title: I-80 Carlin Tunnel Detours End for Season on Nov. 27

Story Text:

Interstate 80 traffic detours will end as the Carlin Tunnels project nears winter construction shutdown after a successful first construction season, the Nevada Department of Transportation has announced.

Since June, drivers on westbound I-80 have been detoured through the Carlin Canyon area. Beginning Nov. 27, the detour is scheduled to be discontinued for winter and both directions of I-80 traffic will travel directly through the Carlin Tunnels.

The project began construction in May, and the following major work items have been completed on eastbound I-80:

     ·  Rehabilitation and seismic upgrade of four bridges, including construction of two new bridge deck surfaces

     ·  Reconstruction/repaving and roadbed rehabilitation of three miles of interstate roadway surface, including additional barrier rail, drainage systems and numerous devices for monitoring roadway conditions

     ·  Installation of innovative LED tunnel lighting system to improve driver visibility by gradually dimming or brightening lighting to match outside conditions- the first such system to be used in a roadway tunnel in North America

“It’s been a successful first construction season, and we’re right on schedule,” NDOT Assistant District Engineer Michael Murphy explained. “As the construction detour ends, drivers will really be able to see the large amount of improvements made to the eastbound interstate this year. It will be a smoother drive and safer, easier travel through the tunnel.”

As construction begins again in spring, westbound traffic will again be detoured to the adjacent old highway U.S. 40, bypassing the under-construction tunnel area. Meanwhile, eastbound traffic will continue to travel through the tunnel in which construction is not underway. The project is anticipated to fully complete in fall 2014. In total, the approximately $31 million project by Q&D Construction will improve nearly three miles of I-80 through the Carlin Canyon. The roadbed leading up to and through the Carlin Tunnels will be reconstructed, including enhanced roadway drainage and new concrete near tunnel entrances. Tunnel lighting will be renovated. The project will also enhance and retrofit eight bridges and improve intelligent transportation systems such as tunnel monitoring cameras and ice warning system.
